Running a small business, managing an e-commerce store, or building an online side hustle comes with a lot of moving parts. Staying on top of your bookkeeping is hard enough without the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) moving the goalposts.
The ATO has rolled out major structural changes and new compliance rulings that will directly impact your cash flow and how your business income is assessed.
Side Hustle or Business? The ATO’s New “Digital Eye”
If you are an influencer, content creator, online seller, or casual freelancer, the ATO is officially tracking your digital footprints.
The ATO has released Draft Taxation Ruling TR 2026/D2, which heavily cracks down on casual side hustles and online activities. Through advanced automated data-matching programs, the ATO now automatically pulls sales and payment records directly from platforms like PayPal, Stripe, Shopify, Amazon, and eBay.
Under the new ruling, the ATO is looking at whether your “hobby” is legally operating as a business. Key indicators include:
- The systematic and repetitive nature of your online activity.
- Whether you receive “free” products, gifts, or sponsorships (which the ATO now explicitly defines as assessable income, not tax-free perks).
- Operating with a clear commercial intent to make a profit.
If the ATO decides you are carrying on a business, you must declare every digital dollar, track your cost bases meticulously, and potentially register for GST if your turnover clears the $75,000 threshold.
The $20,000 Instant Asset Write-Off is Here to Stay
It’s not all tough news. In a win for small business certainty, the $20,000 Instant Asset Write-Off has been made permanent for eligible businesses with an aggregated annual turnover of less than $10 million.
This means you can continue to claim an immediate, full tax deduction for the cost of eligible depreciating assets (like new computers, shop equipment, tools, or office tech) worth less than $20,000 that are first used or installed ready for use within the financial year.
